Appraise Gender Equity Social Innovation System (Work Package 1)

Work package 1 will lay the foundation for understanding the benefits of adopting gender equity in policy and practice by analysing and assessing social innovation ecosystems and gender-inclusive innovations in 22 countries. The findings will enable the mapping of stakeholder organisations and actors in the social innovation eco-systems and systematic evaluation of each countries’ gender equity and digital inclusion innovations. This will be further researched by conducting case studies of selected practices and policies in participating countries.

Objectives:

  • Develop a new methodology for conducting gender equity audits focused on entrepreneurship and digital inclusion in social innovation ecosystems
  • Create a systematic map of stakeholders, which represent a variety of different perspectives on gender equity
  • Establish a baseline of gender equity-relevant innovations in policy, ICT products and services, and ICT design and development processes
  • Conduct 22 case studies of gender-inclusive social innovation ecosystems in 20 MS and AC and 2 non-European countries

Work package 1 activities will produce the following deliverables:

As the first deliverable from EQUALS-EU, this methodology report describes the methods applied in acquiring the data needed to understand where the EU stands with regards to gender equity in digital and social innovation. In order to investigate the current situation in different countries and networks, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to over 200 actors – university departments, start-ups, incubators, companies and public institutions. The questions were formulated with guidance from a survey of over 40 mapping tools. Both quantitative yes/no-questions and qualitative, open-ended questions were included to provide a broad and in-depth understanding of the situation. After a limited pilot study, questions were revised to ensure simpler language, and translated into relevant languages as required for each participating country.

The Compendium provides a comprehensive overview of innovations for gender equity and digital inclusion in 22 EU and non-EU countries that were included in the research. This an overview does not delve into country specific findings but provides a much needed outlook. The D1.3 is accompanied by the D1.2 which attempts to map the existing networks as shared by the participating organisations

The data on which this deliverable relies was collected from 22 countries, also referred to as consortium members. Each country was asked to distribute the questionnaire to 10 organisations, and part of the survey asked respondents if they collaborated with other organisations on work involving gender equality in social and digital innovations. The responses to these questions are what informs this report.

D1.3 is comprehensive in sharing the rest of the findings from the survey, and D1.1 outlined the methods that were applied in collecting the data that is being presented across deliverables 1.2 and 1.3. This deliverable visualises the collaborative partnerships between and among the organisations that responded to the survey from the 22 countries. The attached visuals are rather dense in their presentation. The summary map, combines all the responses, and the reader will have to zoom in on connections that are of interest to acquire a magnified view.

The report will showcase the results of a series of case studies of gender equity in social innovation ecosystems from the 22 countries. Based on their results, a final report on Gender Equity in Social Innovation Ecosystems will be produced. The 22 case studies provide input to Work Packages 2, 3 and 4.

Create New Solutions for Gender Equity and Digital Inclusion (Work Package 2)

WP2 will use co-innovation methods to produce new gender equity solutions and ICT products and services. Co-creation processes will be implemented by organizing 12 innovation camps on sustainable gender equity practices and 12 hackathons for developing ICT solutions for digital inclusion in 24 countries (European and non-European).

The results (new policies, process solutions, etc.) of the activities will be evaluated and synthesized and used to create a roadmap for the Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion which will be developed in the WP3. Additionally, the outputs of WP2 will be translated and contextualized for broader promotion and advocacy in non-European countries in the Global North and Global South.

Objectives

  • Compose the structures and agendas for 12 interdisciplinary innovation camps and 12 hackathons hosted in 24 countries and focused on creating new gender equity solutions and ICT products and services
  • Host series of 12, one-day innovation camps in collaboration with local public, private, civil society and academic sector organizations in 12 countries to create new gender equity policy and process solutions
  • Host series of 12, 24-hour hackathons in 12 countries to develop feasible and realistic ICT products and services for digital inclusion
  • Synthesize the results of the innovation camps and hackathons and create a roadmap for sustainable gender equity practices in social innovation and entrepreneurship

Work package 2 activities will produce the following deliverables:

The goal of this deliverable is to highlight the training process and the inputs provided to partners of the consortium in deploying their hackathons and / or innovations camps according to the projects framework and strategic guidelines. This included regular monthly meetings with the entire group of partners but also bilateral and more focused meetings to attend partners who needed more training, advise and follow-up.

This deliverable serves as a basis for launching, implementing and carrying out their event in a harmonized and coordinated fashion. Templates, toolkits, communication materials, press releases and graphic designs have been produced and provided to partners all along the way and summarized in this deliverable. These universal materials are adaptable to each local context and situation and each partner is free to adjust the overall key messaging to the specifications of their country and community.

The last deliverable in Work package 2 will synthesize the results of the evaluation of the hackathon and innovation camps outputs and based on those results create a roadmap for the Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion. This will include the sustainability and social impact strategies documented by the event winners including relevance for and connection to the UN SDGs and the key concepts and value drivers and general approaches for commercialization and scaling that the teams from each country presented in the description and presentation of their solutions. The results and roadmap will be used to inform the development of the two Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion in the Work Package 3.

Project partners will organize hackathons and innovation camps between February and May 2022. Innovation camps will focus on eliminating barriers to sustainable gender equity in the ICT sector and creating a new policy or process solutions for the digital inclusion of women and girls and will additionally focus on the following thematic priorities of their host institution. Unlike the innovation camps, the hackathons will be dedicated to designing and developing new ICT products and services, not just new policy and process solutions. The hackathons provide an opportunity for new and emerging ICT developers to create technical solutions for gender inequity. This is achieved through agile development, rapid prototyping, validating, testing, and demonstrating the new ICT products and services. Deliverable 2.2 will comprehensively present the results from all events.

Transform Gender Inequity into Sustainable Social Impact (Work Package 3)

Whereas WP1 and WP2 are dedicated to identifying and mobilising relevant stakeholders and creating new solutions for gender equity and digital inclusion, WP3 provides strategic advice and guidance and catalyses commercial growth and social impact for 24 women-led start-ups (winner of 24 events organized in WP2) It initiates, oversees, and concludes a program focused on professional development mentorship and training to advance at least 72 social entrepreneurs from 24 countries.

To achieve this, EQUALS-EU will provide business development mentorship and training work placements, co-innovate two Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion (Sustainable Social Impact Model and a Value Creation Model Canvas) and, finally, create and spin-off a network dedicated to advancing gender equity in social innovation and entrepreneurship. Objectives

  • Provide business development training for at least 72 social entrepreneurs from 24 countries
  • Develop strategic opportunities, partnerships, and markets for 24 new start-ups led by women
  • Involve expert and peer representatives as active mentors and advocates for the 24 start-ups
  • Co-innovate two Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion
  • Spin-off professional network of women and girls in social innovation and entrepreneurship

Work package 3 activities will produce the following deliverables:

The consortium will develop a six-month incubator and work placement program for the 24 winning teams from hackathons and innovation camps, providing business development mentorship and training to form new start-ups led by women. Deliverable 3.1 is a compilation of training materials that will be used to provide the teams with business development mentorship and training on product and service design, strategic priorities, and potential for value creation, commercialization, business leadership, strategic management social innovation and entrepreneurship.

The activities and outputs of the Work package 3 will culminate with the establishment of a professional network for women and girls focused on gender equity in social innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe. The network will expand and build off the EQUALS Global Hub and seven other European networks while differentiating itself through its focus on relevant workstreams for Europe including social innovation and entrepreneurship, STEM and power skills, and women’s leadership in the ICT sector. Value Creation Model Canvas (deliverable 3.2) will be used to develop an initial business plan and value creation model including potential thematic focal areas for each of the network’s centres. After the network have been established, members of the advisory bodies of EQUALS-EU, the winning teams from hackathons and innovation camps and all the participants from the hackathons and innovation camps will, based on their interests, be invited to join the network. The network and its centres will ensure the ongoing sustainability, growth, and visibility of EQUALS-EU

The results from hackathons and innovation camps compiled in the Roadmap for Gender Equity Tools and Two Gender Equity Tools and outputs from former FP7 and Horizon 2020 project will be used to co-innovate two Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion including a Sustainable Social Impact Model and a Value Creation Model Canvas. Will differ from existing models, frameworks and other toolkits by focusing specifically on the key themes of EQUALS-EU – gender equity, intersectionality, inclusive design, and social innovation and entrepreneurship. The Tools will then be fed into WP5 activities as key inputs for dissemination and communication and knowledge exchange and learning. The Canvas will additionally serve as a foundation for developing the business model for the EQUALS-EU network (deliverable 3.3)

Exchange Knowledge and Transfer Technology for Gender Equity (Work Package 4)

WP4 will accelerate the impacts of WPs 1, 2, and 3 by leveraging existing stakeholders and innovations (WP1) to develop new leaders (WP2) and reinforce the EQUALS-EU network (WP3). It consists of three tasks and focuses on the professional development of 24 future leaders (one representative per start-up) and advocates in gender equity and digital inclusion. It will promote knowledge exchange and technology transfer within Europe and between European and non-European countries.

This will be realized by designing three joint professional development courses that will be implemented in the international summer school that will consist of three boot camps, one for each of the courses. The summer school will be organized in Kharkiv (Ukraine), Geneva (Switzerland) and Valencia (Spain). Evaluation of the educational quality and learning outcomes of the summer school and will provide recommendations for using the courses to build capacity in non-European countries in the Global North and South. Objectives

  • Host colloquium of academic, industry and civil society organizations focused on capacity building and educational cooperation in gender equity
  • Co-design three joint courses on women’s digital rights, transformational leadership, and STEM skills.
  • Create mobility program and scholarship for 24 future leaders in gender equity and digital inclusion
  • Host an international summer school consisting of three one-week professional development boot camps in Kharkiv, Ukraine; Geneva, Switzerland; and Valencia, Spain.

Work package 4 activities will produce the following deliverables:

In line with the objectives of the EQUALS-EU project which aims to build capacity in gender-inclusive innovation in Europe and partner countries worldwide, the first public EQUALS-EU Colloquium meeting aimed to dispel stereotypes and foster a gender inclusive innovation ecosystem through targeted discussions around key traits and skills needed to empower women in the digital age.

Over 100 experts from the mobile industry, academia, civil society and international organisations reflected on the modern-day challenges to championing female leadership in tech, They were encouraged to share best practices and experiences from among their sectors and discuss the current state of the digital leadership gap in Europe and across the Eastern partnership alongside the challenges and solutions to bridging this gap. Following the main plenary session, participants were split into three working groups to brainstorm further and reflect on the challenges and solutions to fostering digital rights, access to technology and healthcare provision, as well as leveraging Science, Technology and Innovation skills for gender equity and building strategic communication skills to promote gender equity objectives.

EQUALS-EU consortium will host an international summer school and professional development boot camp to elevate 24 future leaders and role models in gender equity and digital inclusion. At the end of each boot camp, an evaluation will be conducted regarding the educational quality and learning outcomes of the summer school, providing recommendations provide recommendations for using the courses (T4.2) to build capacity in non-European countries in the Global North and South.

The EQUALS-EU Consortium members will sum the outputs of deliverable 4.1 to create three professional development courses that promote human-centred skillsets including ICT-related STEM and power skills.The courses will provide the basis for implementing the international summer school and professional development boot camps and will include a standard format for course descriptions, learning outcomes, pedagogical methods, and forms of assessment and a repository of digital learning materials. The courses will also build on each other so they could also be offered as a full three-week program.

5.1 Communication and Dissemination Plan and results

Work package 5 focuses on communication, dissemination and exploitation of the key results from EQUALS-EU. It benefits from the active involvement and close collaboration with the external stakeholder groups to further communicate and disseminate the results to key audiences including countries not covered by the Consortium members and exploit the results beyond the life of the project.

Objectives

  • Ensure that EQUALS-EU results will reach and be endorsed by key stakeholders in European and non-European countries in the Global North and Global South
  • Establish and maintain a recognisable and consistent project identity and branding and maintain the necessary internal communications infrastructure for the Consortium
  • Streamline all communication and dissemination activity of the Consortium
  • Effectively utilize social media and press to communicate the project and its results, smartly leveraging existing platforms and other gender equality initiatives

Work package 5 activities will produce the following deliverables:

The aim of the Communication and Dissemination Plan (CDP) is to define key communication and dissemination objectives, target groups, main messages, communication tools and channels, key target audiences for each project deliverable and monitoring and evaluation tools to measure dissemination and communication activities.

The consortium developed a usable and accessible website and social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, following the visual identity. These digital tools are the key communication channels strategies for promoting EQUALS-EU ideas and results to the public.

Deliverable 5.5 represents annual reports of the social media activities and analysis of communication activities against set KPIs.

The leading partner has established an internal infrastructure that supports the

consortium’s needs to collect, organize, share and store securely all relevant project documents – drafts and final versions, deliverables, reference documents, and project meeting agendas and minutes.

Delivered: February 2021

The project logo and visual identity were designed to ensure uniformity and external recognition of the project’s outputs for European and non-European audiences from the start. The package also includes common branding templates and user guidelines for the Consortium members to adopt in their local and national communications including relevant publications, videos/infographics, event materials, and social media campaigns.

Delivered: June 2021

Upon finalising the Gender Equity Tools for Digital Inclusion, one Consortium member from each country covered by the project (except KAIST) will develop a short exploitation plan that details the strategy for endorsing the Tools. The summary of exploitation plan implementation will result in 16 summary reports, with details on how the Tools have been endorsed and what commitments have been made. The endorsement of the Tools will be a major impact on the EQUALS-EU project, and will also demonstrate the potential opportunities and hurdles of integrating gender equity in social innovation and entrepreneurship.
