ICT for Social Equality

3-6 May 2022

A four-day hackathon was hosted by KMOP on 3-6 May 2022 with the theme “ICT for Social Equality”. During the first day, an online conference brought together ICT experts, women entrepreneurship experts and members of the Greek and European Parliament members to discuss “Women’s Emancipation in the Digital Age”.

The discussion was a valuable source of inspiration for both hackathon members who actively asked questions to experts, but also for the general public as the first day of the event was open to everyone and eventually attracted more than 200 participants. The second day was dedicated to the beginning of the main hackathon event and took place physically at KMOP’s day centre in Piraeus, Attica with 12 participants. During the third and fourth day of the hackathon, participants had the chance to work together online in designated online meeting rooms and submitted their proposals for the evaluation of the jury.

The winning solution was “Safeguarding cultural heritage, boosting women professional inclusion and circular economy policies via digital sewing seminars and education programs and developing marketized recycled products made of fabric”.

This solution revives a cultural tradition to create a new field of activity for the empowerment of women, as well as vulnerable groups and local community, by teaching sewing, embroidery and recycling of clothes and fabrics. It combines the modern technology – use of AI software, electronic sewing machine – with human factor in such a way to create a benefit for the environment and general public.
